Roadway Reopened After Accident, Chemical Scare

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. (CBS 3) ― A ramp from the Blue Route to the Pennsylvania Turnpike has been reopened after a tractor trailer carrying hazardous materials overturned, shutting down the busy roadway for hours.

The semi overturned while on the ramp from the northbound I-476 to westbound I-76 just after 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The ramp was shut down and hazmat crews were brought to the scene after it was determined the semi was hauling hazardous materials.

According to PennDOT officials, the tractor trailer was full of a dozen 150-gallon containers of hexaflourozirconic acid, a hazardous, corrosive material.

Crews worked through the night transfer the containers before removing the truck shortly before the morning rush.

Officials said the chemical posed no threat to the public, but precautions had to be taken.

The driver of the semi was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with non-life-threatening injuries.

No other injuries were reported.
