A SEPTA track inspector was struck and killed by a Regional Rail train Thursday, November 5, 2009 - day three of the SEPTA strike.

A SEPTA track inspector was struck and killed by a regional rail train in East Oak Lane Thursday morning.
Authorities say the accident involving an inbound R3 train happened at about 8:45 a.m. at 8th Street and Chelten Avenue.
Police say the inspector, identified as Kevin Sparks, 34, was walking on the tracks with another SEPTA worker when the train, traveling southbound on northbound tracks due to an equipment problem, approached from behind and struck the victim.
"The employee was a track inspector and he was working with flagmen," SEPTA spokesman Richard Maloney. "They were inspecting tracks south of the Melrose Park station."
The flagman was able to jump to safety.
SEPTA says the accident temporarily suspended the Warminster (R2), West Trenton (R3) and Lansdale/Doylestown (R5) Regional Rail Lines between the Melrose Park Station and Fern Rock Transportation Center.
Service between Fern Rock Center and Philadelphia stations remained in operation though thousands were stranded for several hours.
All regional rails have since been cleared and full service is available at the mentioned stations.
The deadly accident and interruption of service comes on day three of the SEPTA strike. Wednesday, the regional rail trains were further delayed when a lead car caught fire in Overbrook.
The accident remains under investigation.
