Preparing For The Susan G. Komen 3-Day

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― For 3 days and 60 miles, many will be getting out their best walking shoes to battle breast cancer. CBS 3's Lesley Van Arsdall talks about getting ready for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day walk.

Anne Marie, Natasha and I each had our own reasons for wanting to be a part of the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day walk to raise money for breast cancer research.

"I've been involved for several years with Sisters for the Cure, which really targets minority women to make sure we're getting the mammograms that we need and getting the information that we need to protect ourselves from this disease as much as possible," Natasha said.

I will be walking for my mother who was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer six years ago.

"My number one reason is to support you and this is so much about friends supporting friends. I also I went through a scare with my own dad with prostate cancer," Anne Marie Green said.

We know we are ordinary compared to the real stars of the event. The thousands of other women still under going treatment or just finished who will be participating in the 60 mile journey. But we do know we have to ramp up our fitness routines. So we enlisted fitness expert Lauren Boggi to help us train.

"Distance walking is really tough and personally, I think it's sometimes harder than running," Boggi said.

With different fitness routines comes different training. Boggi suggested to work outside and increase the number of miles.

"I run about four miles, five times a week and I'm hoping that's good enough," Ann Marie said.

"Running is a little bit different than walking," Boggis said. "You should be walking every day, I'd say 10 miles."

Inspired by the courage of the survivors we are walking with every step of the way.

The 3-Day walk takes place October 15-17. For more information and to see stories from last year's walk, visit http://cbs3.com/the3day
