Thousands gathered for Philadelphia's Breast Cancer 3 Day emotional opening ceremony held Friday morning at Willow Grove Park.
The ceremony marked the kickoff of the annual 60 mile walk throughout the Philadelphia area by hundreds of men and woman walking to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer.
CBS 3 producer
Cathy Molique laced up her sneakers to walk.
"This is a huge moment," said Molique. "I'm walking for both my grandparents. Both of my grandmothers had it, one died from it."
All of the participants are walking for someone.
"I've dedicated my three days here to my mother who is a two-time breast cancer survivor," said walker Paul Spiller.
"I lost a friend last year," said an emotional Martha Gaines of Galloway Twp. "It's for everyone who is suffering and going through breast cancer."
At the age of 30, Allison Fawcett is battling breast cancer that has spread to her liver. She is inspired by her daughter. "I'm young, I'm fighting, I have a two-year-old daughter."
Even in treatment, Allison manages to be the number one fundraiser in Philadelphia.
Each step taken on the 60 mile journey is a move toward a cure for a disease that has devastated too many.
"It was hard going through the passing of a loved one, seeing her struggle," said Joey Anthony, who lost his mother to the disease. "This just makes it all better, us all being here."
In 2007, 2,300 men and women participated in the walk; this year 3,100 hit the starting line.
The Breast Cancer 3-Day takes place in 14 cities nationwide and is a series of three day, 60-mile walks that raises millions of dollars for breast cancer research, education, and community outreach programs.
