Abington School Honors Teacher Battling Cancer

ABINGTON (CBS 3) ― Medical Reporter Stephanie Stahl reports an elementary school in Abington turned pink for the day Thursday.

It was a big show of support for one woman who's meant a lot to so many. She's only 45-years-old and in the fight of her life, but her students gave her plenty of reasons to smile today

Students at McKinley Elementary were putting on a show today for their school Vice Principal Terry Hanafin.

"Mrs. Hanafin is one of the best vice principals we've ever had," said Grace Barry.

Thursday was Mrs. Hanafin Day as the staff and students organized this special event to show their support for her in her battle against breast cancer.

"They've been incredible. The staff has been overwhelming the kids have been just very, very helpful," Hanafin said.

As a result of her illness, Mrs. Hanifin, who's been at the school for 13-years, hasn't been able to work recently, but she tries to visit as much as she can.

"There's nothing better than a child on a bad day," she said.

In addition to wearing pink and celebrating with pink balloons, the students also raised money to help fight cancer.

"Terry has gone thru this whole thing with grace and composure and pride and this was a real opportunity for children to see life in action," said Principal Mrs. Teresa Montanaro.

What the students and staff want to see most is Mrs. Hannifan back at work.

"I really hope she gets better," said one student.

The school is planning future events to show their support for Mrs. Hannifan.
