PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― The weather got in the way on Friday and Saturday, but not on Sunday!

For the first time this year, Philadelphia's Breast Cancer 3-Day got reduced to a one-day event because of the wet and windy weather.

The event's national spokesperson, Jenne Fromm told CBS3, "With all of the challenges we've had, you would think it would dampen spirits but its dampened shoes only."

Originally, about 3,000 participants signed up to walk 60 miles over the three day weekend. The event raises money to help researchers take a step forward in the fight against the disease.

The change in plans still brought out close to 2,600 walkers who braved the elements to fight breast cancer.

"We have layers, we have backpacks with all the clothes, we can always get changed," Carol Bove of Maple Shade, NJ said.

Bernie Shaw, also from Maple Shade, NJ added, "This is the easy part. The people that are suffering, they have the hard job. This is the easy part."

Jeff Freeman was out to walk for his wife. Rosalind Cown walked in honor of her coworkers, family and friends. In fact, all of the participants were out walking for someone. Their commitment and courage inspired CBS3's Lesley Van Arsdall, Anne Marie Green, Natasha Brown and producer, Cathy Molique to join the fight.

"I'm just so privileged to have walked on behalf of my mom and I can't wait for 2010!" Van Arsdall said.

"Indeed, it was moving, it was fun and I'm kind of glad we've come to the end though," Green added.

Brown said, "Yes, absolutely. It's been a grueling route but don't get me wrong, it was most worth it."

It was an invigorating day for supporters. It was an emotional one for survivors who paraded into the closing ceremony encouraged and hopeful they are now one step closer to a cure.

According to organizers, the 3,000 participants who signed up for this year's event raised almost $8 million for breast cancer research, education and community outreach programs.
