A Berks County community is in mourning following a house fire that claimed the lives of two young children Saturday morning.
Emergency crews were called to Oley Turnpike Road at about 9:45 a.m. after reports of several people trapped inside a burning home.
The fast moving fire quickly tore through the residence, trapping two young children inside.
"Since this is a much older home, made of older wood, the flames went up fairly quickly," said Chief Christopher Neidert of the Exeter Township Police.
Authorities said a 20-month old boy and a nine-year-old boy were killed in the blaze. Four others were able to escape the home without serious injury.
Firefighters spent Saturday afternoon dousing hot spots while investigators searched for a cause.
"It appears accidental at this time from the information that we have, but it's such a tragic and sad event, especially the day before Mother's Day," said Chief Neidert.
Investigators said a lack of fire hydrants impeded hampered efforts to control the flames. The homeowners are now getting aid from the American Red Cross.
