Museum Taking Beetles Found In Pa. Post Office
MOHTON, Pa. (CBS 3) ―
A package of enormous, exotic beetles discovered by a Berks County postal worker over a year ago are now destined for the Smithsonian.
The world-renowned museum in Washington D.C. is hoping to add the confiscated Hercules, Rhinoceros and Goliath beetles to their permanent collection.
The huge insects were found in a package marked "Toys and Gifts" at a post office in Mohton, Pennsylvania in May 2008. The postmaster heard a strange scratching noise coming from the parcel and contacted the department of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Officials froze the 20 live beetles, which are believed to have been sent from Taiwan. The rare insects could have caused major damage to crops in the United States.
