Whale Stranded In Avalon Dies

AVALON, N.J. (AP) ― It could be days or weeks before officials know what caused the death of a True's beaked whale that became stranded in Avalon.

The whale first appeared along the beach at 23rd Street and passersbys managed to help it back into the ocean. But the whale came back ashore just north of the 32nd Street fishing pier Wednesday.

More than a dozen people tried, to no avail, to push the mammal back to sea.

The town's Public Works Department estimated the whale, measuring 14-feet long, weighed about 1,200 pounds.

The Marine Mammal Stranding Center will perform a necropsy.
