Congress Funding Study On N.J. Shore Damage

PORT REPUBLIC, N.J. (AP) ― Federal money will help fund a study of shore damage along the Jersey shore.

The Richard Stockton College Coastal Research Center in Port Republic has secured $700,000 from Congress to examine beaches from Sandy Hook to Cape May Point.

A laser beam will be shot down from a helicopter to measure beach elevations and sand dune heights.

The findings are meant to help pinpoint which areas need better protection to prevent the type of damage seen in 1999's Tropical Storm Floyd or the 1992 nor'easter.

Researchers expect to issue findings in 2014.
