Government To Pay For N.J. Beach Munition Cleaning

SURF CITY, N.J. (AP) ― The federal government will pay the whole cost to clean up World-War I munitions found on Long Beach Island.

The state and federal governments had been bickering over who should take responsibility for the $17.7 million project.

The ordnance was pumped ashore on Surf City last year with sand as part of a beach replenishment program.

U.S. Rep. Jim Saxton had the cleanup money inserted into the 2009 Defense Reauthorization Bill, which has been approved by Congress. The Republican is retiring from Congress at year's end.
