Angie's List: Resume Writing Help

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― In today's economy, competition is fierce for jobs. If you're one of the many people looking for work you need to make sure you're not selling yourself short.

In today's Angie's List report, Jim Donovan shows you how hiring someone to help write your resume might help you stand out from the rest.

Many people that are on the hunt for a new job that haven't been in the job market for a long time.

So hiring a professional resume writer could be a big help.

"When you're looking for a resume writer you need to look for someone who has expertise in resume writing, not just writing. And in particular in your field. Writing a resume for an IT professional is different than writing one for a marketing professional. So you want to have someone that knows all the buzzwords and knows what to highlight for that particular field," said Angie Hicks, founder of Angie's List.

It's important they spend time with you going over your work history.

"If you're looking to hire a resume writer you should expect that they are going to interview you. Talk to you about your qualifications, your experiences and anything that might feel like a concern on your resume, a gap in employment for example," said Hicks.

Angie's List advice for hiring a professional resume writer:

· Pick a resume writing professional who is familiar with your industry, and make sure the service has worked with people on your level before. Ask to read some of their work.

· A good resume writer will meet with the client first; an interview will typically take 60 to 90 minutes. They will then advise clients to dig deep to find those things that describe ones' ability and past experience to go above and beyond basic job requirements.

· Resume services may charge by the hour, by the page, by the word, flat rate, or depending on a person's level of experience, which translates into how complex the assignment is. Ask for an estimate. Do additional drafts or revisions cost extra?
