Angie's List: Birthday Parties

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Do you have any little ones that you're getting ready to plan a birthday party for?

The idea of entertaining all their friends in your house can be a little overwhelming.

That's why hosting the party at another location like an indoor fun center is popular.

But it can also be expensive. In this week's Angie's List report, Jim Donovan shows us how you can trim some of the expenses and still have a good time.

If you plan it right, it's a great way to throw a children's party stress free, without breaking your budget.

"A growing trend is for parents to have birthday parties out of their house whether it be at facilities that are themed like princesses, or ones that have moonwalks, or even at museums, so that kids have activities to do, during the party," said Angie Hicks, founder of Angie's List.

Typically you have to buy a package which runs anywhere from $100 to $300.

"It's usually based on a certain number of kids. So if you're trying to cut corners on costs, keep it just to the number of kids they allot whether it be 10 for example. Adding each kid can really add up to the cost," said Hicks.

And make sure you plan ahead and shop around.

Don't wait until the last minute to plan the party. Consider alternative times for having the party. Most people want their party on a saturday afternoon. If you could do one on a weekday, you might be able to get a better deal," said Hicks.

Advice for booking a birthday party:

· Plan ahead: Book far in advance to get your desired time and date. Try to book during the week to save you some dough. Remember a deposit is usually required.

· Ask if they offer a birthday package and what is included. Typically, additional guests cost more.

· Get your guest list and invitations out at least 2 weeks prior to the party. That way you'll have an idea of how many people to expect.

· Is food included, or do you have to bring your own? Same question with decorations - can you request a specific theme for the party?

· Ask if a host is provided for the party.

· If you reserve a room, what special requests do you have? (theme, decorations, etc.)

Gratuities for staff are welcome. Typically plan on tipping 15-20%
