Angie's List: Roof Maintenance

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― You might not spend much time thinking about your roof, but it's really your home's first line of defense. If your shingles are old and worn out, they may not protect against water and you could be at risk for structural rot and interior damage.

In this week's Angie's List report, Jim Donovan tells you what you need to know when it comes to maintaining and repairing your roof.

A typical asphalt shingle roof, lasts anywhere from 20 to 25 years. But that doesn't mean you should just ignore it.

"One of the best things you as a homeowner can do to extend the life of your roof is to pay attention to it. Notice any problems early so you can have a roofing contractor out to make repairs. Also, check your attic periodically. Be sure your vents are clear, that there's nothing stored in front of them because that's going to make your roof stay in better shape," said Angie Hicks, founder of Angie's List.

And if you need to replace or repair you roof, make sure your roofer is licensed and insured.

"You certainly do not want their workers on your roof if they don't have workers comp insurance because it someone gets injured, or falls off the roof - that would come against your homeowner's claim," said Hicks.

Also, if you live in Pennsylvania or New Jersey, be sure to check with your state attorney general's office to make sure your roofer is registered with them, as required by law.
