As the five year anniversary of September 11th approaches, an emotional new photo exhibit on display at the National Constitution Center shows how a nation mourned that tragic day.
On Friday, September 8, "9/11: A Nation Remembers" opened to the public with the placement of four white roses.
Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson and Chief Inspector Joe O'Connor were in attendance for the touching opening.
"I found it to be quite moving, I found it to be overwhelming in some of the photographs that were taken," O'Connor said.
Photographer Jonathan Hyman spent the past five years taking the pictures; some along roadsides in small rural towns, others in the biggest cities in the country.
Of the 15,000 pictures taken by Hyman, a select 100 are on display at the N.C.C. But one thing visitors will not find in any of the photos are images from 9/11.
"This is an exhibition of what happened after 9/11, not about the attacks themselves," said Steve Frank of the N.C.C.
Some family members who lost loved ones in the attacks attended a preview of the exhibit Wednesday night. Many felt compelled to share their stories.
"Michael Hardy Edwards, our son-in-law, he was 33-years-old and on the 104th floor; 2nd tower, the 1st to go down," said a victim's family member.
New York City Fire Fighter Terry Ward, whose tattoos are featured in one photo, was impressed by the exhibit.
"I think the idea is outstanding, I can tell you that people seem to forget, hope something like this will refresh their memories somewhat," said Ward.
Audrey Levin, who lost a daughter on 9/11, offered her thoughts saying, "I think it's just beautiful, it shows people care, they're interested, there's hope."
Those who wish to share their own memories of September 11 can record them for free all day at the National Constitution Center to be released in a podcast.
"9/11: A Nation Remembers" runs through January 1, 2007.
