Bucks Co. 9/11 Memorial To Debut In Late September

YARDLEY, Pa. (AP) ― Dedication of a memorial to the 17 Bucks County victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks has been delayed until the end of September, officials said.

Those working on the memorial hoped it would be ready by Sept. 11, the five-year anniversary of the attacks, but heavy rains earlier this year forced the delay. The ceremony is now scheduled for Sept. 30 at the memorial site in a Lower Makefield park.

The Garden of Reflection memorial will include a pool with two fountains representing the World Trade Center towers and a railing with panels bearing the names of the 17 Bucks County victims. Smaller panels along a walkway leading up to the pool will bear the names of all 2,973 victims of the attacks.

"We wanted to create a feeling of a remembrance journey, then a meditation journey and eventually a healing journey," said architect Liuba Lashchyk, who designed the memorial being built by Building Restoration Inc. of Rydal. "The water represents cleansing and healing. We wanted to bring all the feelings in."

Tara Bane, 34, who lost her husband Michael, who worked in the World Trade Center, was one of those who has worked for the last five years to raise the $1.2 million needed for the memorial.

"Originally, it was going to be more of a memorial for ourselves because we didn't have grave sites or the bodies of our loved ones," she said Thursday. "Then, more and more, we realized it would be a memorial for everyone to come to and remember, but also to heal and get on with life."
